A Reason For® Science teaches basic Life, Earth, and Physical Science through fun, hands-on activities and also features Scripture Object Lessons.
The full-color, 36-lesson, student workbook is designed to develop critical thinking skills; each week, students begin with a hands-on activity demonstrating a key science concept, which is followed by discussion, journaling & comprehension questions, summary, and related scriptural object lesson. Each hands-on activity has step-by-step directions and is accompanied by illustrations for each step.
The teacher's guide contains an overview of the course, as well as lesson-notes that surround reduced student pages. Instruction includes noting general categories; specific topic focus; objective, overview, additional comments, options for alternative procedures, teacher-to-teacher notes, direct instruction with some scripting, field trip & guest speaker ideas, answers, and other important teaching information.
Material Kits contain essential supplies for the entire school year. But hands-on activities by themselves are not enough. To truly master a concept, students must have "minds-on" experiences as well! This means actively engaging the material through a variety of activities such as discussion, problem solving, and journaling.
Life Science topics include how materials move through a plant’s system, how colors and patterns relate to survival, creatures are sorted by characteristics, stages in a plant’s life cycle, ways seeds are spread to help plants survive, living things have life cycles, how creatures interact, adapt and relate to their environment.
Earth Science topics include the properties of rocks, soil, water, and air, the properties of color and texture in soil, properties of porosity and nutrient values, properties of the eight major planets, basic properties of stars, major changes in the Earth’s surface, wind speed and direction, rainfall and temperature, climate, extreme changes in weather.
Physical Science topics include how recycling helps conserve resources, understand the importance of recycling, the concept of density, physical properties, surface tension, how matter changes from one state to another, concept and meaning of inertia, the relationship of motion, mass, and force, the concept of action/reaction, air resistance affects motion , position and motion, air pressure to motion, what happens when light is absorbed, two primary ways that heat is produced, the movement of heat, how atoms relate to static electricity, difference between open & closed circuits, push and pull of magnetic forces
